Course Summary

The training provides the learner with the necessary methodologies and techniques relating to intelligence and analysis tradecraft to enable efficient and effective production of assessment that informs decision making.

Aims and objectives of the course provide the student with the skills and learning to undertake analysis and assessment of the differing forms of data, information and intelligence. Provides instruction and application of Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and Structured Analytical Techniques within their role and responsibilities to enhance their capabilities of analysis.

Applying research and analytical methodologies relating to data, information and intelligence to support the production of intelligence products and analytical assessment.

How to undertake and manage Commissioning and setting Terms of References to requested tasks ensuring a structured approach to organising and preparing to undertake and produce assessment.

To challenge previous knowns and bias in production of assessments through the analytical techniques taught.

How to undertake and apply Charting techniques to provide visual understanding of data, information and intelligence, using internationally recognised charting standards.

Apply effective dissemination and briefing tools; written, visual and verbal techniques in demonstrating their learning to enhance organisational intelligence and analytical capability. Utilise and apply use of academic and alternative research material provided throughout the delivery and able to research and identify new or updated references to support informed assessment.

Please note that this course also has a Pass / Fail element. Students are required to complete three elements to attain the pass mark for accreditation.

Course Summary

They will through the training be able to undertake quantitative and qualitative research in support of the strategic, tactical and operational environments.

Course overview

The course is designed to develop intelligence professionals capability, methodologies and tradecraft in the application of structured analytical techniques.

The training will challenge mindsets, open debate and seek alternative critical thinking processes focussing on system 1 and system 2 thinking processes and their applications within tactical and strategic environments.

The course applies some of the methodologies developed and applied by Heuer, Pherson and Ratcliffe, such as SWOT and Advanced SWOT, Red and Blue Teaming Alternative Competing Hypothesis etc… and applying assessment to inform effective decision-making.

Course design is based on the needs of the organisation through consultation. Delivery can be through agreed CPD days or alternatively agreed days of delivery. Scenarios and exercises will be relevant to the organisation.

Course overview

The course is a two-stage modular approach, to provide students with the capability to apply methodologies and skills in analytical charting techniques both manually and electronically through internationally recognised charting standards and software.

The training delivery and inputs have been designed to support individuals or organisations that work with big data, information and intelligence and require the capability and skills to structure and pictorially display the acquired data in a presentable format to assist in briefings and outlining the threats, risks and vulnerabilities within the identified priority.

Individuals that are new to charting techniques of data or the i2 Analyst
Notebook software or have had recent software upgrades will benefit from the training delivery.

The course includes:

  • How to apply Anacapa charting methodology and techniques
  • Effective methods to chart big data
  • How to apply international standards and charting conventions
  • Process of structuring complex data and charting
  • How to use i2 Analyst Notebook – application, data importing, analysing, mapping
  • How to present and use analytical charts within the courtroom
  • Practicable application of Link (Network) Analysis, Flow (Directional) Analysis and Event (Case) Analysis.
  • Interpret the data and how to apply source and evaluation to the information Apply ‘Charting Standards and Conventions’ including chart design, attribution, entities and direction.
  • Apply the i2 Analyst Notebook software, the functionality within the software to construct charts, manually and automatically.
  • How to utilise the analytical and assessment tools
  • Understanding of the data that has been structured and analysed.

IBM i2 Analyst Notebook V9.0

(note this training can also include the Analytical Charting Techniques course if required)

Aim

To provide the student with the core skills and techniques in applying the recognised standards in analytical charting processes. The teaching will enable the students to structure data sets and visualise their findings in structured charting methodologies; Link / Directional & Event. Through an immersive learning programme the students will move from conventional charting methods to fully utilising the internationally recognised analytical charting software IBM I2 Analyst Notebook. The students will be evaluated through specific exercises and scenarios that develop and test their learning.
